The benefits of chiropractic care for improving circulation

Cold hands, a heavy feeling in the legs after sitting all day, or muscles that never quite feel loose — poor circulation shows up in small, easy-to-dismiss ways. Restricted spinal joints and chronically tight muscles are one contributor that's often overlooked.

How the spine affects blood flow

Nerves exiting the spine regulate blood vessel diameter throughout the body. When a spinal joint is restricted, the irritation to nearby nerve tissue can affect that regulation, and chronically tight muscles compress the small vessels running through them — both of which reduce blood flow to the tissue downstream.

What adjustments and muscle work do

Restoring normal joint motion reduces that nerve irritation, and releasing chronically tight muscle relieves the compression on the vessels running through it. Patients often notice warmer extremities and less of that heavy, sluggish feeling in the legs after a series of visits.

What helps between visits

Movement is circulation's best friend — standing and walking for a couple of minutes every 30-45 minutes if you sit for work, staying hydrated, and keeping up with any stretches given at your visit all support what adjustments start.

A note of caution

Circulation issues can also stem from vascular or cardiac causes that chiropractic care doesn't address — sudden swelling, one-sided leg pain, or chest symptoms need medical evaluation first, not a chiropractic visit.
