Joints and muscles work together, so treating one without the other often leaves the job half done. At Golden Bear, hands-on muscle work is part of nearly every visit, not an add-on. Dr. Corey matches the technique to the tissue and to what you are comfortable with, instead of running the same routine on everybody.
Techniques Dr. Corey uses
Trigger point therapy
Sustained, targeted pressure on tight, tender spots in a muscle that often refer pain to other areas.
Myofascial release
Slow, sustained pressure and stretch applied to muscles and the connective tissue around them.
Active Release Technique (ART)
Pressure applied to a specific muscle while you move it through its range of motion.
Instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilization (IASTM/Graston)
Smooth-edged instruments used to work along muscles and tendons.
Cupping
Suction cups that lift and stretch the skin and underlying tissue. Temporary circular marks are common and usually fade over several days.
Percussion therapy
Rapid Release Technology and Theragun percussion, used on stubborn, tight muscle groups.
Assisted and PNF stretching
Stretching with Dr. Corey's help, sometimes alternating gentle muscle contractions with relaxation to work toward more range of motion.
When muscle work is part of care
Muscle work is commonly part of care for:
- Neck and upper back tension
- Low back pain and muscle spasm
- Shoulder and hip tightness
- Tennis elbow and other repetitive strain
- Stiffness that limits training, running, or everyday movement
What it feels like
Most techniques involve firm but tolerable pressure. Some tenderness during treatment or for a day or two afterward is common, a bit like the day after a hard workout. You set the intensity: tell Dr. Corey if anything feels like too much, and he will adjust.
Is this the same as massage?
Not quite. Massage can be great for general relaxation and tension. At Golden Bear, muscle work is targeted to the findings from your chiropractic exam and combined with adjustments, exercises, and a plan for the problem you came in with.
Pricing
Muscle work is included in regular visits. Extended visits allow more time on the table for additional modalities and deeper muscle work.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to get adjusted to get muscle work?
Tell Dr. Corey your preferences. When it is appropriate for your exam findings, your plan can lean more on muscle work and exercise.
Will cupping leave marks?
Often, yes. The marks are usually painless and fade over several days. If you would rather avoid visible marks, let Dr. Corey know and he can use a different technique.
