Superbills, HSA and FSA: getting paid back for chiropractic care

Golden Bear doesn't bill private insurance, so every visit has one flat, published price. Your benefits can still help. Many plans pay back part of out-of-network chiropractic care when you send them a superbill, and HSA and FSA cards work here like any debit card, with no card fee.

What a superbill is

A superbill is a detailed receipt you send to your insurance company yourself so it can pay you back for out-of-network care. You pay at your visit, and your plan reimburses you based on your out-of-network benefits. Ask for one any time, and allow up to three weeks after your visit for it to be ready.

Your superbill lists Golden Bear's tax ID (EIN), Dr. Corey's National Provider Identifier (NPI), the date of each visit, the procedure (CPT) and diagnosis (ICD-10) codes, what each visit cost, and what you paid.

Call your insurer before your first visit

A five-minute call saves surprises later. The number is on the back of your insurance card. Ask:

  • Do I have out-of-network chiropractic benefits? Many HMO plans don't.
  • What's my out-of-network deductible, and how much of it have I met this year?
  • After the deductible, what percentage do you pay back?
  • Is there a yearly limit on chiropractic visits?
  • Do I need a referral or pre-authorization?
  • Which claim form do I use, where do I send it, and how long do I have to file?
  • Do you cover ongoing visits, or only care for a specific injury or condition?

Write down the date of the call and the reference number your insurer gives you.

Filing your claim

Most insurers ask you to send their member claim form, filled out and signed, along with your superbill. You'll usually find the form in your insurer's app or on its website. Keep copies of everything you send. If a claim is denied, ask your insurer for the reason in writing and bring it to your next visit.

Paying with an HSA or FSA

The IRS counts chiropractor fees as a medical expense, so you can pay with your HSA or FSA card at your visit, with no card fee. If your plan asks what you paid for, your receipt or superbill shows it.

You can use HSA or FSA funds for 10-visit packages and memberships too. Many plans only count a visit as eligible once it happens, not when it's prepaid, so check with your plan administrator first.

Medicare

Medicare has its own rules, and they depend on whether you have Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan. Please call before you book, and we'll go over how a visit works with your plan.

What we do, and what's up to you

We'll give you an accurate superbill. Filing it and following up with your insurer is up to you, and we can't promise what your plan will pay. No one at Golden Bear will speak with your insurance company without a signed Health Information Release Form.

What to bring to your first visit

  • Your HSA or FSA card, if you're paying with one
  • Your insurance card and photo ID, if you plan to submit a superbill
  • A list of your medications, and any prior imaging or reports
