Back to basics: how chiropractic care can alleviate lower back pain

Lower back pain touches nearly everyone at some point, and the causes span a wide range — a single awkward lift, months of desk-bound sitting, or years of small compensations finally catching up. The good news is that most of it responds well to conservative, hands-on care.

The usual suspects

Most lower back pain traces back to a mechanical cause: restricted facet joints, tight hip flexors and hamstrings pulling on the pelvis, or a disc that's irritated but not herniated. Less commonly, pain radiating down a leg points to nerve involvement, which changes the treatment approach.

How chiropractic care addresses it

Treatment usually combines spinal adjustments to restore motion to restricted joints, soft-tissue work on the muscles pulling the pelvis out of alignment, and specific core and hip exercises so the improvement holds once you're back to daily life instead of fading within a few days.

What to do (and not do) early on

Complete bed rest tends to slow recovery rather than speed it — gentle movement, short walks, and avoiding prolonged sitting generally serve people better than staying still. That's a different conversation than what to do in the first 24-48 hours after a serious injury, which is worth discussing at a visit.

When to get it looked at

Pain lasting more than a few days, pain that radiates into a leg, or numbness and weakness are all reasons to get evaluated rather than wait it out — the earlier mechanical issues are addressed, the faster they tend to resolve.
